Mate Klikovits – a 500-year-old wine tradition
Mate Klikovits is a representative of the autochthonous Croatian minority in the province of Burgenland, with a family tradition of winemaking of 500 years.
With his wines he is a regular participant in the event Wine and Vruja in Ika, and throughout Croatia he is known as a cultural worker because as a longtime general secretary of the largest cultural society of Burgenland Croats around the world promoted history, culture, language and identity of Croats in Austria.
Large donations and humanitarian aid came to Croatia through this society during the Homeland War. For his long-term work, he was awarded the state decoration of the Order of the Croatian Danica with the figure of Marko Marulić. He is also one of the founders of the Wine Knights in Croatia.
The Klikovits were among the first Croats to come to the then German village around 1530. In the National Chronicle of Burgenland it is written that 42 Croatian families settled in Cogrštof (Zagersdorf). The causes of this migration were the Turks and their destruction on the way to Vienna. The settlers began to deal wine, as did the Klikovits family. Mate is the 18th generation of Croatians in a wine village.
Fifteen years ago, the predominant variety in Cogrštof was the blue Frankovka, which held an extraordinarily good price. Later they started planting Zweigelt, Cabernet sauvignon, Zeleni veltlinac and Sauvignon blanc. After that, they decided on Pinot Noir (German and French clone) and Muscat. Eight years ago, at the request of an oenologist from Croatia, they planted Istrian Malvasia.
27 years ago Mate was the first to make white wine from blue Franconian, which was not provided by Austrian law. Then he was visited by a delegation from the Ministry and they found a common solution – Blaufränkischweiß gekeltert (blue Frankovka white processed). Deliberately reducing the amount of grapes, picking by hand and special grape processing are prerequisites for top quality wines.

In addition to sharing various events from the world and the homeland, the main goal of the portal is to inform emigrants. The section “Useful information” where you can find answers to legal regulations, tax issues and all other information that is important to emigrants, returnees and immigrants is the most read. In accordance with changes in the law, sections and information are regularly updated.
The initiator and editor of the portal is a dear friend of MG2.8 Ruža Studer Babić.
The Total Project started in October 2011, when British writer Paul Bradbury decided to try and improve the information service on Croatia’s premier island of Hvar.
After that many more sites followed such as Total Croatia News (https://www.total-croatia-news.com/), and you can find them on this link: https://www.total-croatia-news.com/info/104-about-us.
