VATRENI: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE HOMELAND AND THE DIASPORA – FOOTBALL AS A GUIDE
At MEETING G2, we have been saying for 10 years that the economy, culture, and other sectors of Croatian society should look up to what our sports sector, especially football, has been doing for the past 20-30 years.
Our footballers are a testament to the immense strength of a united homeland and diaspora. To the silver medal at the World Cup in Russia 2018, among others, led us Luka Modrić from Zadar and Ivan Rakitić, a Croatian from Switzerland. The bronze generation in France in 1998 also had Croats from abroad in its ranks, as did the generations in between.
Diaspora footballers are most often born in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany, but there have also been players from Australia, the USA, and other countries. Similar thoughts are now being entertained by some other sports federations – they organize scouts in countries with strong Croatian communities to find potential new members for Croatian national teams in various team sports among young Croatians.
But let’s return to the world’s most popular sport – football. These days, the European Championship is taking place in Germany, from which Modrić’s Vatreni, unfortunately, were eliminated too early despite the fantastic support of hundreds of thousands of Croatian fans from the homeland and all over the world. We won’t delve into tactics and mistakes here but will focus on the main topic – with eternal thanks to coach Dalić, all the players, the entire staff, and the HNS for everything they have done for Croatia and for the global promotion of our homeland.
An international application called “They Scored” recently analyzed which teams at Euro 2024 have the most players born outside the country they play for.
It turned out that of the 24 teams, only four have all players born in the country they represent – Denmark, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, and Austria. On the other hand, Albania has the most players, as many as 18, born in the diaspora. Following them are Croatia and Turkey – with eight players born outside the country.
And do you know which Vatreni were born outside of Croatia? Večernji list compiled a list of them with their places and dates of birth: https://www.vecernji.hr/sport/foto-znate-li-kojih-osam-vatrenih-nije-rodeno-u-hrvatskoj-rijetki-ce-uspjeti-nabrojiti-sve-1778968
From the current Vatreni lineup, four were born in Germany, two in Austria, and two in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
They are Josip Stanišić, born on April 2, 2000, in Munich, Germany. Another defender, Marin Pongračić, celebrates his birthday on September 11, 1997, and was born in Landshut, Germany.
Their defensive colleague Josip Šutalo comes from Čapljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and celebrates his birthday on February 28, 2000. Striker Ante Budimir, also from Bosnia and Herzegovina, was born in Zenica on July 22, 1991.
Midfielder Mateo Kovačić was born on May 6, 1994, in Linz, Austria, where young midfielder Luka Sučić was born eight years later on September 8.
Their midfield colleague Mario Pašalić was also born in Germany, in Mainz on February 9, 1995, while his namesake Marco Pašalić was born on September 14, 2000, in Karlsruhe, Germany.
